AEO or SEO: how to tell which one your business actually needs

AI Search · 8 min read · Updated 2026-10-14

Short answer: You need both, but rarely at the same time: SEO is what gets your pages crawled, ranked and trusted in the first place, AEO is what gets those same pages quoted inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, so if you already rank and your clicks are sliding you need AEO, and if you don't rank for your own service-plus-city query at all you need SEO first.

## whats_different

What's actually different about AEO and SEO?

The two run on most of the same plumbing, which is why the choice feels confusing. A crawlable site, clean headings, accurate schema, real author information, links from places people trust: all of that helps you rank and all of it helps you get quoted. Call it 70 to 80 percent shared work. The disagreement is about the last slice, and about what you measure.

SEO optimises for a position in a ranked list. The unit of success is a link a human has to click. AEO optimises for inclusion in a generated answer, where the unit of success is a sentence of yours lifted into the response and a citation chip carrying your domain. One is a placement. The other is a quotation.

That last row is the one owners feel first. Nothing in your analytics breaks when an answer engine summarises your category and cites three competitors instead of you. Rankings hold, clicks quietly thin out, and nobody gets an alert.

## how_to_tell

How do you tell which one you're short on?

This is a one-hour diagnostic. Run these four checks in order and stop at the first failure.

  1. 01Search your own service plus city in Google, logged out

If you're not on page one for "[service] [city]" and your Google Business Profile isn't in the map pack, you have an SEO and local problem. No amount of AEO work fixes a site that answer engines can't find a reason to retrieve.

  2. 02Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the question a customer would ask

Not your brand name. Ask "who are the best [service] companies in [city]" and read who gets named. If competitors appear and you don't, while you still rank in Google, that gap is the AEO gap, and it's the specific thing worth paying to close.

  3. 03Compare impressions to clicks over the last six months

Flat or rising impressions with falling clicks usually means answers are resolving above your result. Falling impressions means a ranking problem, which is ordinary SEO.

  4. 04Check whether a retrieval bot can actually read the answer

Open the page a customer's question maps to. Is the answer in the first 100 words as plain text, or three scrolls down, inside a tab, or rendered client-side? Answer engines quote text they can extract cheaply.

8% vs 15%

Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults across nearly 69,000 Google searches in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, 8% of visits produced a click on a traditional search result, against 15% with no summary. Clicks on a link inside the summary itself happened in about 1% of visits.

Read that carefully, because it cuts both ways. It isn't evidence that SEO is dead. It's evidence that the same ranking, on the same query, returns roughly half the clicks it used to once an AI summary sits above it. The ranking asset didn't vanish. Its conversion into visits got cut.

## our_numbers

What did our own numbers look like when clicks were zero?

Here is our own measurement, not an industry average. On 2 October 2026, this site's content-gap snapshot (generated from our Bing Webmaster export) recorded 20 published articles, 0 search clicks and 0 search impressions. Click-through rate wasn't computable, because the denominator was zero. By every classic SEO dashboard, there was nothing there.

The same export showed 4 grounding queries: real questions an answer engine had resolved while touching this topic space. On one of them, "EEAT Score Website Bewertung Methoden", our best citation share was 37.5 percent, which sounds strong until you see the base: three citations existed in total for that query, and we held one or more of them. On the thinnest, "tools to measure improve E-E-A-T signals", our share was 0.4 percent against ten citations. Same site, same week, two orders of magnitude apart.

3 clicks from 186 impressions

Our own Bing Webmaster data for this domain, 130 days to 2026-10-11: 186 impressions and 3 clicks. Impressions climbed from under 3 a day in September to about 10 a day in October while clicks stayed flat. The ranking layer moved and the click layer did not, and that gap is the thing AEO and SEO disagree about.

What we won't claim

That snapshot's trend verdict was insufficient-data. Judging the engine needs 14 days of citation history and the export had 0 rows, so we had no trend to report, only a baseline. We publish the dated snapshots append-only and let the git history be the time series, which means we also publish the days where the honest answer is "can't tell yet".

The lesson for your business is the measurement order, not our raw numbers. Judge an AEO program on click-through rate in month one and you'll conclude it failed, because answer engines resolve the question on the results page and the click never happens. Track citations per query first. Clicks are the lagging indicator now.

## order_of_operations

Which do you fund first if you can only fund one?

Fund SEO first if any of these are true: your site isn't fully indexed, your Google Business Profile is unverified or thin, your services don't exist as separate pages, or you can't name one query you rank top ten for. An answer engine has to retrieve something before it can cite it.

Fund AEO first if you rank, impressions are steady, clicks are drifting down, and competitors get named in ChatGPT answers where you don't. The ranking work is already done and the gap is quotability: question-shaped headings, self-contained answers, specific numbers, named authors, structured data.

  • Still invisible in Google: SEO first, AEO second, no exceptions.
  • Ranking but losing clicks: AEO first, it's the cheaper fix of the two.
  • Brand-new site in Canada: do both at once, because there isn't a foundation to protect yet.
  • Strong brand, weak content: AEO first, you already have the authority signals.

Two context numbers for Canadian businesses. StatCounter put Google at 85.66 percent of Canadian search in August 2026 and Bing at 9.56 percent, so Google SEO still carries the volume. Semrush's ChatGPT clickstream analysis found Google is the single biggest destination of ChatGPT's referral traffic at 21.6 percent of outbound clicks, so even heavy AI users keep landing back in a search engine.

Coverage is unstable too, which argues against betting everything on one surface. Semrush's AI Overviews study found they appeared for 6.49 percent of tracked keywords in January 2025, rose to nearly 25 percent by July, then fell back to 15.69 percent by November 2025. A strategy tuned to one month's footprint is tuned to noise.

## what_to_do_now

What should you ship in the next 30 days?

Whichever side you're short on, these five moves pay off on both sides. We did them in this order here.

  1. 01Write down your ten real customer questions

In the words customers use, not your service names. These become headings and FAQ entries. Our snapshot tracked demand this way and showed 12 covered, 18 partial, 1 uncovered across 20 articles, which told us where to write next without guessing.

  2. 02Put the answer in the first 100 words

One self-contained paragraph per question, no setup, no "in this article". If the sentence only makes sense after reading the three paragraphs above it, an answer engine can't lift it.

  3. 03Add one verifiable number per page

A measured figure with a date and a source beats a confident adjective. Numbers from your own operations are the ones no competitor can copy.

  4. 04Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, not just Search Console

Bing is only 9.56 percent of Canadian search by StatCounter's August 2026 figures, but its webmaster data is where we read grounding queries and citation counts. That export is the source of every first-party number in this article.

  5. 05Re-run the ChatGPT and Perplexity question monthly

Same question, same wording, logged out, with a dated note on who got named. Three months of that is a trend line, and it's the only scoreboard that matters before clicks move.

The uncomfortable part: it takes months before either channel confirms itself, and the first signal is a citation, not a sale. Anyone selling you a single-channel answer is selling simplicity you can't buy.

## faq

Do I need AEO or SEO for a small local business?

You need both, but SEO comes first if you aren't yet ranking or your Google Business Profile isn't verified and complete. Answer engines have to be able to retrieve and trust a page before they can cite it, so foundations come before quotability. Once you rank for your service-plus-city queries, AEO work is what keeps you named inside AI answers.

Can AEO replace SEO entirely?

No, not in 2026. StatCounter put Google at 85.66% of Canadian search in August 2026, and Semrush's ChatGPT clickstream analysis found Google is the largest single destination for ChatGPT's own referral traffic at 21.6% of outbound clicks. AEO changes how you win inside answers; it does not remove the need to be findable in a search index.

Why are my rankings stable but my clicks falling?

Because the question is getting resolved above your result. Pew Research Center found that when a Google AI summary appeared, 8% of visits produced a click on a traditional result, compared with 15% when no summary was shown. Your ranking is intact; its conversion into visits has roughly halved on those queries.

How do I measure whether AEO is working?

Track citations and mentions per query, not click-through rate. Record who gets named when you ask ChatGPT and Perplexity your core customer question, dated and logged out, and pull grounding query and citation data from Bing Webmaster Tools. Expect roughly two weeks of citation history before any trend is readable, which is the threshold our own reporting uses.
